Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Chasing Unicorns. Every business decision, every design detail, and every aspect of our production process is grounded in an ethos of conscious, considered production and consumption.

If vintage is the most sustainable way to shop, then ethically hand-producing timeless, keepsake fashion in tiny runs is the next best thing. The push for sustainability and zero waste in our business is an evolving goal, and we are committed to full transparency, full disclosure and full accountability.

People & Community

People & Community

The people we partner with in production, and their incredible skill, sit at the heart of Chasing Unicorns.

Since 2016, we have worked directly with a close network of home-based artisans in Bali, many of whom have been with us from the beginning. These are family-run practices, with skills passed down through generations.

Founder Sarah maintains one-on-one relationships with every maker, without intermediaries. She communicates personally with each artisan, collaborating on design details and staying closely connected to their wellbeing. This direct connection ensures fair pay, safe working conditions, and the freedom for makers to work on their own terms.

Our production model is intentionally human-scale. It supports skilled craftsmanship, preserves traditional techniques, and prioritises people over volume.

Each piece moves through multiple skilled hands, from crocheters and embroiderers to dyers and finishers. This collaborative, manual process means every garment is inherently unique.

That uniqueness is inevitable in our handmade process, and it’s incredibly important to us. We celebrate organic differences and the human energy in each piece. In a world where more and more is mass produced, this is what makes our garments so special.

One of the missions of this brand is to do our small part to keep artisan knowledge, techniques, and craft alive in the world, and profitable for the individual artisans. The humans we partner with in production, and their incredible skill, are truly the heart of Chasing Unicorns.

Conscious Creation

Conscious Creation

Sustainability informs every part of Chasing Unicorns, from design and material selection through to production and distribution.

We work primarily with natural fibres including silk, cotton, and linen, alongside limited-run silks, brocades, and custom-designed prints sourced through small suppliers in Italy and India. These are durable, long-wearing fabrics chosen for quality and longevity, designed to be kept and worn over time.

All garments and accessories are produced within the home industry in Bali. There are no factories or production lines. Pieces are created from home studios, allowing artisans to work independently and at their own pace.

Most garments are pre-sold before production begins. When limited stock runs are created, they are intentionally small, typically no more than ten pieces. This ensures demand is met without overproduction or waste, allowing us to operate with true zero-waste principles.

Minimal Waste

Minimal Waste

We produce only what is required.

Most pieces are made to order, with any small stock runs tightly controlled. Fabric usage is carefully planned, and offcuts are repurposed into new designs wherever possible. With no wholesale and no mass production, every garment has a purpose before it is created.

Our packaging is compostable and our studio operates paper-free to minimise environmental impact.

Fashion Made to Last

We design clothing for longevity.

Most of our garments are finished with durable French seams. We always apply thoughtful construction, and hand-applied details that strengthen each piece and support long-term wear. Our focus is on quality over quantity, creating considered styles that are made to be lived in, repaired if needed, and kept.
