WOMAN : WOMEN

At Chasing Unicorns we love women, all women. The mummas, the free spirits, the adventurers, the rule breakers, the advocates, the passionate, the believers, the fighters, the visionaries and most of all the goddess women, beautiful inside and out.

To us each women is simply extraordinary, powerful and radiant and within her resides the most magic of all, the legacy of the women that have gone before her paving the way courageously for a fair and equal future for us all. Like exquisite vintage, the history of women and their accomplishments is a most covetable treasure, one that should be celebrated, cherished and passed on from one female generation to the next, forever. These are our soul sisters who reside mostly in the stars, watching on and ensuring that the women of today stand confidently in their power, strength, wisdom and dreams.

From aviation heroines like Amelia Earhart to big screen, enormous hearted women like Oprah Winfrey there is no shortage of inspirational woman to look too when you are in need of a little insight and courage. There is Rosa Parks, the first lady of civil rights in America and the true mother of the freedom movement, to her we are forever indebted for instilling in the women of today a fearlessness so mighty. Mother Theresa, whose selflessness and devotion to a life lived spreading happiness, love and peace to the suffering and forgotten of the world. It is she who we should thank for filling our hearts with gratitude and humbleness.

How could one write of exceptional women without mentioning Maya Angelou , singer, poet and activist, she who said “My wish for you, is that you continue to be who you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness” her words always spoke oh so powerfully and directly to the soul of women the world over reminding us to be passionate and authentic in our lives and all that we stand for.

There was Coco Chanel the fashion trailblazer who can be credited with liberating women from the constraints of the "corseted silhouette"post-WWI and popularizing and new feminine style. Her words speak of fashion that has transformative power which is an idea that is near and dear to our own heart, soul and ethos here at chasing Unicorns. she sums it up by saying “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening”

The history of women in politics is long and rutted, it is one that has been laid, ripped apart and repaved by women whose tenacity, drive and determination would see them not only hold power in government but make life and world-changing policy. Benazir Bhutto and Kamala Harris are two such fearless women of history who championed democracy on all of our behalves.

Anne Frank, a girl whose stories told of the true horrors of the Holocaust. A girl who never gave up her positivity, even when faced with pure evil. She wrote in her infamous diary “I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart”. From her, the women of today should be forever thankful for the bravery that she has imparted deep into each and every one of our beings. In the modern day, we have the world-renowned primatologist and environmentalist Jane Goodall whose trailblazing activism is leading the way we conserve the natural world and improve the lives of its people, animals and the environment. A woman whose sense of challenge, adventure and peace for all living beings not only drives her but the future of our planet.

There are the creatives, the ones we often entwine our world with here at Chasing Unicorns the Patti Smiths and the Frida Kahlo's of the universe. A punk rock goddess, Patti Smith pioneered a path for women in music that was electrifying, unapologetic and bold, she encouraged us to be honest and true to ourselves as women. Frida Kahlo's art gave us the gift of dream and the ability to explore and question the boundaries of gender, class and race. This magical realist and her work are emblematic to feminism due to their uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. For this, we should be grateful and in her honour, we should remain mindful of the constant need to push boundaries and explore the perception of women.

These women, these names and stories in history are our legacy as women. It is these women and so many others of the past and present whose very hopes, values and ideals we carry intrinsically within us, that we nurture and instil in the next generation of women. There is no greater honour in life than womanhood, no matter the phase or the journey. From us to you, incredible women of the world, we wish you a happy International women's day.
